Architecture: For “Reinventing Paris”, a Korean firm imagines what could push Porte Maillot

 

ARCHITECTURE – The mayor of Paris announced earlier this week that she received 815 applications in response to her call for urban projects “Reinventing Paris”, launched in November to draw innovatively the future of 23 sites in the capital.

Among these projects, that of Planning Korea’s office on the so-called “Pershing” ground above the ring road between Porte Maillot and Porte des Ternes next to the Palais des Congrès drew the eye of the ArchDaily site.

The architects imagined a project as suspended in the void by proposing to fill the spaces left empty in this urban landscape with a floating complex inspired by the plant world.

 

 “The concept of ‘The New Air of Paris’ is to make the space profitable while symbolizing the air of the city for the second half of the 21st century”, explains this Seoul-based firm.

“The design was inspired by the classical shapes and the usual surroundings of the buildings. Floating spaces, directly or indirectly related to each other, have a unique organic structure that takes into account both individuality and connectivity ideas. ”

The structure, which extends from 16 to 24 Pershing Boulevard, in the capital’s 17th arrondissement, could accommodate housing, offices, but also hotels and commercial premises.

“Installed in the void left between two bridges, the architecture would be accessible by different axes and would make the most of the flows and green spaces already in place,” says Planning Korea.

The 23 sites of the call for projects launched by the City Council – ranging from the industrial wasteland to the private mansion – have all been the subject of proposals. The finalized projects will have to be submitted on May 11th. Starting next week, administrative skimming will rule out incomplete applications; mid-July an internal jury at the town hall will establish a “short list” of three to five projects; and in December-January an international jury will choose the laureates.
